Deepen Your Understanding
Principle number 5 is deepen your understanding.
We are constantly bombarded with information. Most of it is nonsense, but some of it is helpful. The equation pictured is of Bayes Theorem. It's basically a way of determining what is most likely true and is a process scrutinizing the information presented to you in reference to your current understanding. And doing so by considering the probabilities of each. How probable is it that my previous belief is true, how probable is it that this new information is correct etc etc until you reach a conclusion that is (hopefully) closest to what is true! By asking yourself the question - how does this fit with my current understanding?, when confronted with novel (and even conflicting) information, you allow yourself to update your knowledge and deepen your understanding of the world. The alternative is holding on to beliefs in spite of new information. If we try hard enough, we can make the world fit our understanding rather than the other way around. How can you take another step forward if you don't let your back foot leave the ground? |
